There was a huge display area promoting the Star Wars Clone Wars franchise, the Star Wars “In Concert” series, and all sorts of things related to the series.

I overheard someone merrily congratulating a costumed maiden for portraying Princess Leia wearing something other than the slave costume. The slave costume was rather popular this year.

Earlier this month, Corey and I took part in a “Singing the Sixties” concert for Vision Academy for the Arts. We were raising money for scholarships for students involved with the arts. The theme was love, peace, and all the fun music that was so much a part of the sixties that we remember.

“Flower Power” was one of the catch phrases of the sixties. Poet Allen Ginsberg advocated that people should give out flowers to soldiers and police while they held peaceful protests against the Vietnam War. Flowers became the symbol for a peace-loving generation.

The purpose of most Reenactment groups is to teach about life during the time period they portray. Research and authenticity are important to the people who participate in these events. The local school children had an excellent learning experience when the National Civil War Association and friends came to Oakhurst. So did anyone who took the time to ask questions and find out how people lived back then.

Here's my Valentine's wish for a happy day. May you have the love and happiness you seek. Take some time this Valentine's Day to go out of your way to smile and be friendly to strangers. You never know when that stranger may become a friend.

Since it is almost Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be nice to do a series of flowers with a romantic style to them.

Valentine’s Day is a bittersweet holiday. I associate it with loneliness and wishful thinking for most of my youth. Love is very painful when you don’t have it.

As children, we gave out sets of Valentine’s cards to everyone in class. I always stuffed mine with those little candy hearts to make them ‘more special.’ The last time I gave out Valentine’s cards was Freshman year in High School. I was giving them to my friends. One girl I had met in some class and talked with a lot asked me what I was doing. I suddenly realized that I had not thought to make a card for her. It was clear to me that I had had the chance to make a real friend of her, and lost it that day.

So for everyone who sees this, I am giving you my Valentine’s wish for a happy day. May you have the love and happiness you seek. Take some time this Valentine’s Day to go out of your way to smile and be friendly to strangers. You never know when that stranger may become a friend.

Winter Solstice may be the first day of Winter, but it holds the promise of the Spring.

Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year where the Earth is at its greatest angle away from the sun. It is the first day of Winter. Nevertheless, it holds the promise of Spring. Even though the days grow even colder from this point onward for months, the days grow marginally longer. The sun shines longer each day.

Winter Solstice is a celebration of hope. Things will get better. You just have to remember beyond the grim storm clouds, the sun still shines.

Winter Wonderland

It snowed here at the ranch last week. On a cold year, we get a few snowy days. The snow usually doesn’t last beyond a day. However, it’s always a beautiful and welcome event to see.

Leaf Drop

Our Liquid Amber tree in the front yard was a mass of color before the snowstorm. Most of the leaves died in a blaze of glory against their white coffin.

Hold Outs

Wawona Winter

I watched the weather reports on the Internet to see how the storm would cover our area. It was kind enough to leave the high ranges around us with snow rather than with rain. So I drove up to Yosemite National Park on Monday to photograph Wawona in its winter glory. The Wawona Hotel is a historic landmark built in 1876 as a resort. There is a golf course built upon the nearby meadow which was blanketed in snow. It was post card picturesque.

After the Storm

<img src="/FarArt/winter/solstice/trees.jpg" alt=Trees" height="427" width="620" />

Wawona Meadow

Meadow View

The Wawona Hotel was closed for repairs until December 18, but there were two Christmas Trees on the porch. This shows a reflection of Yosemite and the hotel.

Solstice Hope

Keep in mind the lesson of the Winter Solstice – the leaves that fall with the snow will be renewed in the Spring. Hope is evergreen.

The Last Leaf

Ever Green

Welcome to the Newest version of the Flying Aardvark Ranch studio. Not only is the style very different, but I just got a new camera with a nice set of lenses. Instead of my Fuji Finepix 2700 with its 7.1 megapixels and 10 optical zoom, which I still carry all the time, I now have a Canon Rebel EOS 500D T1i with its 15 megapixels and a 55-250mm zoom. So now I can feel like I’m not just playing with photography.
