Happy Halloween, Everyone!

Here’s my Halloween treat for all of you… a double posting of Halloween goodies and things that go bump in the night. Zombies and Hauntings… what could be better?

On Friday the 15, the town of Oakhurst was invaded by Zombies who gathered together in a “Cause for Paws” supporting the SPCA animal protection group. These scary creatures stalked the main street of Oakhurst, invading stores and strolling past the graveyard. They even terrorized the pumpkins in our Ralley’s grocery store.

My friend, Jon Bock, who owns the art galleries, Williams Gallery West and the Stellar Gallery in Oakhurst, was also there to document the Zombie walk. Here’s his take on the event on Facebook.

This just goes to show that people of all ages, dead or alive, can gather to support a good cause – and still have fun with it.

Oakhurst Chocolate and Wine Festival

This festival was held at the Oakhurst Community Park and included wine and food tasting provided by local wineries and restaurants. There were food merchants, arts and craft dealers, a silent auction raising money for the local charities, and all sorts of chocolate to savor.

The Chocolate Fountain

The Lion’s Club sponsored the flowing chocolate fountains where goodies ranging from cookies and strawberries to jalapeno Doritos could be drenched in dark or milk chocolate.

The silent auction had many fun things that people could write down bids for. The auction included dinner coupons for restaurants and services, baskets of goodies, art works, and cute chachkies.

Oakhurst Heritage Day

Heritage Day is a local Fall festival celebration held at Fresno Flats Historical Park. It is set up to raise money for the Sierra Historic Sites Association and the Fresno Flats Park. The park has many antique buildings rebuilt here from all around the county. They give tours of the buildings and demonstrate the tradition crafts of the late eighteen hundreds. There were artists booths with quilts, hand-carved wood, and painted gourds. There was a small petting area with a goat and a miniature horse and her foal. It was a fun and educational place to bring the family for the day.

The Lions Club holds its annual Sluice Box Derby near the site. These are homemade vehicles that the kids build and ride down a long sloping hill. The parents and the kids had a great time at it.

Talk Like a Pirate

I had wanted to be in Oceanside for “Talk Like a Pirate” day because they were having harbor days with the pirate theme. Instead, I was in landlocked Oakhurst. So it was a delight and surprise to see a pirate ship parked in the middle of town.

The Figurehead

It was Capn Boring’s homemade pirate ship. The figurehead was beautifully carved pegasus unicorn, and the stern was lined with golden barbie dolls.

On the Captain’s shoulder, you can see what remains of his parrot after it met a cannonball.
