It’s holiday time, and here’s my holiday card to all of you. I wish you the joy and beauty of the season.
Tree Lighting Ceremony
Every year, Oakhurst has a tree lighting ceremony in the center of town. Our choral group braves the cold and crowds to sing the ancient yule time carols like “All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth” and “Winter Wonderland.” There are free hot dogs, cookies, and chocolate for people, a bouncy house for the little kids, and Santa comes to Oakhurst riding on the fire engine. There’s fresh popped kettle corn filling the air with caramel fragrance. Best of all, there are free books for all the children.
As Santa walks up to his chair, the lights of the huge Christmas tree and all the smaller trees decorated by the children in the local schools are then set aglow. Our choir sings, “Here comes Santa Claus” and other golden oldy tunes dating from way before my childhood. There’s a real feel of community generated here.

Christmas in the Mountains
The next day, our chorus sang at Fresno Flats, the local historical park, for their holiday celebration and fund-raiser. Father and Mrs. Christmas showed up with their old model-T Ford and a miniature horse pulled a cart for children to ride upon. I sacrificed my diet and bought some yummy cookies from their bake sale to support the historical park. After all, cookies for a good cause have fewer calories, don’t they?

Christmas Wish

I would have loved to find Santa left me this adorable present eating my christmas tree when I was a child.
